Who it is for

Universities and colleges

Not one building type but eight: teaching space, laboratories, workshops, catering, sport, student residences, offices and a venue that fills up on a Friday night.

What usually applies

A starting point, not a determination. Which of these actually lands on your register depends on the building and how it is used, which is what the applicability questions are for.

Fire safety Martyn's Law Prevent duty Legionella Asbestos COSHH DSEAR LOLER and PUWER Electrical safety Gas safety Food hygiene Licensing Health and safety DSARs

What tends to matter here

  • Student accommodation is sleeping accommodation, which changes the fire duty set materially and is assessed separately from teaching space.
  • Laboratories and workshops bring COSHH, local exhaust ventilation testing and equipment examination that the rest of the estate never touches.
  • Large lecture theatres and student union venues reach Martyn's Law capacities on their own.
  • Subject access requests from students and staff arrive with real deadlines and are rarely the estates team's problem — but they are the same organisation's.
  • Departmental autonomy is the recurring difficulty: the register shows which building is behind without asking each faculty to report.
