Emergency lighting test log
Two different tests on two different cycles, which is why one column on this template is the one people forget to fill in.
No email address required. It is a file.
What it records
Emergency lighting typically has a short monthly function test and a longer full-duration test annually. A log that does not distinguish them looks complete while showing only half of what is required, so the test type is a column rather than an assumption.
The columns
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Date | The date of the test. |
| Test type | Monthly function test, or annual full duration test. |
| Location / circuit | Which luminaires or circuit was tested. |
| Tested by | The person who did it. |
| Duration achieved | For a duration test, how long the units actually lasted. |
| Result | Pass or fail. |
| Faults | Units that failed or were dim. |
| Action taken | Repair or replacement, and when. |
This is a starting point, not a compliance document. What your organisation actually needs to record follows from your own risk assessment and from the arrangements you have in place; a template cannot know either. Nothing here is legal advice.
Or stop keeping it in a spreadsheet
A spreadsheet records what you type into it. It does not chase you when a week is missed, turn a duty amber when a check falls due, or raise an action from a failed reading — and it is not much use as evidence, because it can be edited afterwards without trace.
